Much of the weight loss industry likes to focus on overweight Americans. Yes, we are indeed “cash pigs” for those who sell these products and services. However, a good part of the world is also in a heavyweight (no pun intended) predicament.
Studies showed that 45% of adults all over the world were overweight. Overweight people are more likely to have chronic health problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and knee arthritis. Overweight people also die at younger ages than persons of normal weight.
Many overweight people want to lose weight to improve their health and their appearance. Because so many people want to lose weight, there are many commercial weight loss programs on the market. Many of these highly in-demand products cost a pretty penny. And many of these products, unfortunately, are pretty useless.
Each year millions of Americans and Europeans enroll in commercial and self-help weight loss programs. More often than not, medical institutions and their horizontally challenged patients are painfully uninformed about these programs due to a paucity of comprehensive reviews. Unfortunately, many patients and their doctors know little about the effectiveness and safety of these programs, either.
Few of the studies that have tried assessing weight loss programs can be considered valid. Most of the studies on these programs are unfavorably biased towards the best case scenario, as they only study the successes and not those who have dropped out of the programs for one reason or another. The evidence to support the effectiveness of major commercial weight loss programs is limited. One must think twice before joining commercial weight loss programs – there is simply not enough proof of how well they work.
Do these weight loss programs work or not? Some do in the short term but long term results are doubtful.
The real effective way to lose weight is just what we all want to ignore: a behavioral change diligently over time.
The key to permanent weight loss is so simple yet so overlooked – people need to exercise regularly and change their eating patterns over time. Fact of life – shortcuts and quick fixes do not work. You have to change the way you eat, the amount of what you eat, WHAT you eat and once you do, the goal of successful weight loss is yours to achieve.
The solution is in the number of calories you burn each day – and stuffing your mouth with pablum is definitely not the way to burn calories.
If you are fighting obesity haphazardly, start to change your behavior TODAY. Buckle down, develop a smart weight loss strategy and adopt a behavioral paradigm shift when it comes to losing weight and do it PRONTO! It will take time but the long term benefits and permanent weight loss will be there!
